Classification of article:
(A) Definite article “the” (used with a particular singular/plural noun)
(B) Indefinite article “a, an” (used with any countable singular noun)
Examples:
1. He is a boy.
2. I saw an Aeroplane in the sky.
Boy के पहले ‘a’, Aeroplane के पहले ‘an’ एवं sky के पहले ‘the’ इसी तरह article का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
Article का प्रयोग उन संज्ञाओं के आगे नहींं किया जाता जिन्हें एक आम रुप मे व्यक्त किया गया हो। जैसे-
Man is mortal.
यहाँ ‘man’ और mortal दोनों ही संज्ञाओं का प्रयोग एक आम अर्थ में किया गया है इसलिए article का प्रयोग नही किया गया है।
Usage of indefinite article a & an with examples in Hindi
1. A और an का प्रयोग singular countable noun (जिन्हें गिना जा सके) के साथ किया जाता है। A का प्रयोग व्यंजन (consonant) sound से शुरू होने वाले countable nouns के साथ तथा ‘an’ का प्रयोग स्वर (Vowel) sound से शुरू होने वाले countable nouns के साथ किया जाता है।
For Example:
- Reeta is a beautiful girl.
- Rahul is an honest boy.
- Mr. Gupta is a Doctor.
[Note: अंग्रेजी वर्णमाला में 21 consonant (व्यंजन) – b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, तथा 5 Vowel (स्वर) या मात्राएँ – a, e, i, o, u होते हैं]
2. कभी-कभी ‘U’ letter ‘अ’ की आवाज न देकर ‘यू’ की आवाज देता है जो एक consonant व व्यंजन स्वर है। ऐसे शब्दों के साथ an के स्थान पर ‘a’ article का प्रयोग ही किया जाता है।
For Example:
- A university,
- A utensily
- A student
3. कभी-कभी Letter ‘O’ ‘ओ’ की आवाज न देकर ‘व’ की आवाज देता है जो एक consonant sound है इसलिए ऐसे सब्दों के साथ भी an के जगह ‘a’ लगाया जाता है। जैसे-
For Example:
- A one rupee note;
- A one eyed man etc.
4. कुछ शब्द ऐसे भी होते हैं जो व्यंजन (consonant letter) से आरम्भ परंतु बोलते समय उनका उच्चारण Vowel (स्वर) से होता, ऐसे शब्दों के साथ ‘an’ के स्थान पर ‘a’ लगता है।
For Example:
- An M.P.,
- An M.A., etc.
5. कुछ ‘ho’ प्रारंम्भ होने वाले शब्दों में ‘h’ silent होते हैं और बोलते समय उनका उच्चारण ‘अ’ Vowel (स्वर) से होने के कारण ‘a’ के स्थान पर ‘an’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है।

- An hour, etc.
Examples of indefinite articles a and an
- Rahul is a hardworking boy.
- He has a son and a daughter.
- We found an egg in the nest.
- The Punjab Kesari is a Hindi daily.
- I want a pen, a rubber, and an inkpot.
- The moon is bright.
- The lady has an umbrella.
- He is an idiot.
- Mr. S.K. Sharma works in an office.
Usage of definite article ‘the’ with examples in Hindi
‘The’ is used in the following cases:
1. किसी विशेष वस्तु के लिए जो अनेकों में एक ही होती है – For a particular thing which is only one in many.
For Example:
- The Sun
- The Governor
- The Moon
- The principal
- The Monitor, etc.
[Note : God के आगे ‘the’ नही लगता।]
2. उस विशेष वस्तु के लिए जिसका जिक्र पहले हो चुका हो – For a particular thing which has been mentioned earlier.
For Example:
- Yesterday I bought a pen.
- The pen writes beautifully.
‘The’ के इसी प्रकार प्रयोग को Anaphoric Use कहा जाता है। याद रखिये कि anaphora का अर्थ होता है – to back carry (पीछे की ओर जाना) .
For Example:
- She brought an apple.
- The apple is sweet.
यहाँ पहले वाक्य में apple के साथ an आया है पर दूसरे वाक्य में apple के साथ the का प्रयोग हुआ है। यहाँ the का anaphoric use है, क्योंकि the का प्रयोग पूर्वचर्चित noun (apple) के साथ हुआ है।
इस प्रकार जब Countable noun की चर्चा पहली बार होती है, तब उसके पहले a/an आता है, परंतु जब उसकी चर्चा दूसरी बार होती है तब उसके पहले ‘the’ का प्रयोग होता है।
3. जब व्यक्तिवाचक संज्ञा जातिवाचक संज्ञा के रूप में प्रयोग हो – Before a proper noun used as a common noun.
For Example: Rita is the P.T. Usha of our school.
4. Superlative degree से पहले the का प्रयोग होता है – Before a superlative degree.
For Example: Deepa is the tallest girl in our class.
5. Before the name of :
- Newspaper paper (समाचारपत्र): The Hindustan Times, The Indian Express.
- Religious books (धार्मिक पुस्तकें): The Ramayana, The Geeta, The Bible, The Quran.
- Rivers (नदियां): The Ganga, The Yamuna, The Krishna.
- Ocean (समुद्र): The Pacific Ocean, The Indian Ocean, etc.
- Mountain range (पर्वत श्रंखला) The Himalayas, The Shivalik Hills.
- Historical monuments (ऐतिहासिक स्मारक): The Taj, The Red Fort, The Qutab Minar, etc.
- Factories and Banks (फैक्ट्रियां एवं बैंक): The Birla Mills, The Punjab National Bank. The State Bank Of India.
- Dates of the month ( महीने की तिथियां): The 2nd of October.
- Trains and ships (रेलगाड़ी/जहाज) : The Janta express, The Vikrant, etc.
- Political parties/Organisations (राजनीतिक दल/संस्थाएं): The Congress, The U.N.O., The red cross Society, etc.
- Directions (दिशाएं) : The North, The South, the Left.
- Group of Island/States (द्वीप/राज्य समूह): The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Punjab, China. etc.
- Nationality/Community (नागरिकता/जाति) : The English, The German, The Hindus, The Sikhs, The Muslims, etc.
